Liars of us All

(C) 2020 David John Stevens

The sun won’t rise in the east

The sun won’t set in the west

Twinkling stars won’t shine at night

As I lay me down to rest

The winds won’t blow the answers around

Little kids laughter won’t make any sound

Birds in the branches won’t sing and call

And this broke down earth will make liars of us all

Because what we once said was true won’t be anymore

If we keep on doing the same things

We’ve been doing before

Because the oceans will rise and the mountains will fall

the cities will be drowned alive by it all

No soothing words or slight of hand

Will stop the falling grains of sand

Your votes won’t mean a thing

Words will lose their meaning

The truth will be a changing

Always rearranging

But registers will ring, ring up another sale

in the crowded halls and lobbies

of the nations’ capitals

Votes bought and sold business as usual

And the price of politics will make liars of us all

What we once said was true

Won’t be anymore

If we keep on doing the same things

We’ve been doing before.

Because the oceans will rise and the mountains will fall

Cities will be drowned alive by it all

No soothing words or slight of hand

Will stop the falling grains of sand

Liars of us all, liars of us all

From the valleys down low to the mountains so tall

Birds in the branches won’t sing and call

And this broke down earth will make liars of us all

This broke down earth will make liars of us all
